I fully agree with what others have said - just get out there and start pushing some clay around! You can make mugs without a wheel very quickly (I don't have a wheel in my studio). That's not to say wheels are bad - you can do amazing things with them. I'd recommend checking out some hand-building books from the library or bookstore to learn the fundamentals of clay assembly.
