Wendy and other prospective carvers, I recommend finding a "chop" near you aand seeing if one of the attendees would be willing to "take you under their wing" so to speak. If you don't live near anyplace that regularly hosts a chop, plan a trip. Contact some TC chop participant in say, San Diego, and see if they can supply you with wood to make a mask (or something that travels easily if you are taking a plane) , find out what chisels and tools to get , plan a design and have fun.
In my case, I got lucky and a friend (Billy the Crud) was in town, I hosted the chop, he took me under his wing and (when he wasn't using them) I was able to borrow his tools. I hope this helps. -smiley
