Thank you MadDogMike, Dan and I lay all those perimeter bricks ourselves. To lay brick you have to dunk each brick into a bucket of water or it dries up the mortar so fast it doesn't stick to the brick well.

When I was learning about glazing the mugs I was told to lightly wet the inside and outside of the mug with a clean sponge before glazing. This starts the capillary action so the glaze will adhere well. They used the brick analogy which worked well for my mind.
