Thanks Sven and Buzzy...now I know there are brown and black variants, I'm very tempted to try and find examples to complete the set. (A+ to that ebay seller for the sales pitch too...pretty good effort for a $7.95 resin!)

Sven, you're on the money as usual...those post figures are a very close match and it looks entirely possible to me that Tene may have created that particular style of tekoteko. They still make them in Rotorua today so his influence has been far-reaching. Rauru and Carved Histories have been added to the wishlist too - it's very hard to buy all the great books on Maori art published in NZ as there are so damn many of 'em!
