How to hollow out a palm log? - Tiki Carving

Googling "hollow out a log" gave me some ideas about using a drill and chisel, but that was for regular woods, not palm trees. My uninformed brain is telling me that that approach might not work on palm logs, because aren't they more of a fibrous wood than a hard wood? Anyway, I'd appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!
