A "Shag" style fireplace? - Beyond Tiki

I just got an orange one with a square black bottom-don't see one quite like it here but similar. Someone has added a black front and door to convert it to an ersatz wood stove. I need to use this to heat the garage I have to live in since my house burned. I also plan to get an infrared heater. Do you think it will do the job? Looks so cool., I would love to use it. Is there some way to make it more efficient-insert/refractory brick? Do I need to worry about it? Bad news is it's northern Michigan. Good news is I paid 25 bucks.
