The posts are attached footings with a post base (PB). Use a raised PB to keep the wood off the ground. It looks like the posts have 2x8 cross beams (left to right) that are attached to the inside. On the outside of the posts he has attached 2 more 2x8 beams (front to rear) that support the 2x6 rafters. He then attached 2-2x6 vertical supports that are attached to the cross beams. Attached to the vertical supports is a 2x8 ridge beam. Typically a ridge beam is one size up from the rafters you use. That is the structural part of the roof. Everything else is for decoration.
The ceiling joists appear to be 2x6's. You are correct in that the the inside beam that appears to stick out the front and has a decorative cut is purely for decoration and is attached at the front posts.
According to the description, the builder was a carpenter. Don't forget to add knee/corbel bracing to the corners to add strength. He did this in the later pics. Most people use Simpson Connectors which is good. I would use through bolts and lag screws where possible on the beams and cross beams. Again, check your local requirements and overbuild it for lasting strength. Don't use nails on the beams, they wont last.
