If you want to stay under the canopy and pay more money, the Golden Nugget (especially the new Rush Tower) provides luxury rooms on par with some of best on the Strip.

If you do visit the Strip, the Cosmopolitan is a pretty impressive place. And if you MUST stay on the Strip, the historic Tropicana has been recently renovated.

The golden nugget is the nicest hotel in downtown vegas.
i've stayed in the carson tower last year and had no complaints.
when i stayed it was $10 a night more than the plaza which was a total dump; although to be fair they have started renovations since then.

i stayed at the tropicana 3 years ago the room the initially gave me was filthy but they switched me to a room in another tower that had already been renovated.
the trop is at the south end of the strip so plan on doing a lot of walking or take the deuce bus or the monorail

i've also stayed in bally's this summer while not having been renovated in a long time our room was well maintained. we had an amazing view of the pool & eifel tower at paris and the fountains at the belaggio from our room window. unfortunately the hallways were dark and grimy and full of discarded room service carts.

usually i stay at the orleans which is off the strip but has free shuttle service to and from the strip from 9-midnight.
rooms are clean and nice and very reasonable.
