The rooms at the El Cortez (actually the whole place) were renovated several years ago. It's not a smokey dump anymore. The Tower rooms there are some of the best in Downtown (excluding Golden Nugget of course).
Also their boutique wing across the street, The Cabana Suites is almost the same price as the hotel casino proper.
Who knew?

I want to stay at the El Cortez downtown next time!
