Hot press= smooth papers, cold press= bumpy papers. I like both, prefered the smooth, and made myself learn the rough. higher quality papers are less absorbant I've started some pieces that I had to throw out because the paper sucked. I find that on some pieces I still feel the need to ink it after I'm done with the painting part just to crisp it up. I think its a cool effect to paint in after the inking too.
Dr Martins now makes a semi transparent watercolor kind of like a liquid acrylic, its a happy medium. I'm dying to get the new Dan Smith watercolor sticks, which are pure pigment. I like paints with really saturated colors. Maybe I'll get them for christmas.

I've been painting watercolors since I was 12, my mom was a watercolor teacher, and it still took me 20 + yrs to get the hang of it.or to at least find what worked for me.I still think thers some improvement to be achieved.
