One of those strange German - English word similarities that have no common root, "Die" is either the female definite article, or in the this case, the plural definite article in the German language. I used to read a newspaper called "Die Zeit" which translates to "The Times" and never think anything about it - until I became half American. Now when I see Germanized names like "Die Beatles" in print, I think "What did they DO to you!?"
