Being in the U.S., I hadn't any exposure to the Hula Hawaiians as, unlike the Waikikis, their music didn't seem to filter into the U.S. I came across a cassette of theirs at at a used record shop some years ago while living in Portland and thought they were AWESOME..although for some reason I had thought they were German. Since then, I've gotten a few LPs of their from Ebay, again, as I NEVER seen to actually SEE any of their LPs in any record shops. But, if anyone is interested, I absolutely HIGHLY recommend the Bear Family CD compilation put out a few years ago. it has 30-something tracks on it & i just love their European-style (German, really) ATTACK on the steel guitar..very aggressive & unlike the melodious Native Hawaiian style. It's a great listen. |

That's GREAT to hear they are still playing!! Another group I would LOVE to find out more about (or ANYTHING really)would be the Waikikis out of Belgium. I guess they were more of a studio band, but I grew up really enthralled by their music and woud love to learn more about the band members. |

Mahalo for sharing those. Kind of funny to see "Die Hula Hawaiians" on the cover. |

One of those strange German - English word similarities that have no common root, "Die" is either the female definite article, or in the this case, the plural definite article in the German language. I used to read a newspaper called "Die Zeit" which translates to "The Times" and never think anything about it - until I became half American. Now when I see Germanized names like "Die Beatles" in print, I think "What did they DO to you!?" |
