I caught part of this on PBS a couple of weeks ago, and even though it's not explicitly Tiki, I expect that a lot of you would find it as fascinating as I did. It's about a group of young Hawaiian men that were sent to colonize Jarvis, Howland, and Baker islands in the 30s and 40s, by the US government, ultimately to claim them as potential air bases. They got just about as far away from it all as you can get:
