Indeed. The popularity of "Hawaiian" music was actually THE first manifestation of Polynesian Pop (NOT Tiki Pop) on the mainland, beginning in the late 1800s/early 1900s....
...and culminating in the Hawaiian music craze of the 1920s and 30s, which even reached Europe.
