They are open-air, originally. There is a large Japanese maple in the middle of ours. Some people through the years have added different types of roofing to them. They aren't the most convenient things when it is raining, but in this area we have a moderate climate, so we don't have to suffer through much rain, and there is never snow. The house surrounds the atrium on three sides, with patio door entrances, and there is a glass wall with a door that forms the entry from the street. So when you walk in to the atrium, you can enter the living-room, the kitchen, or the office. Once I get the home computer up and running, I'll be able to post pictures of the house.
