I'm located in MD and want to learn to carve tiki's. What is the best kind of wood to use since there is no palm to get ahold of??

Poplar carves easy, and takes stain very well.
The grain patterns are noticeable.

Basswood and Tupelo are common for duck carving, so they should work easily.
The grain patterns are more subtle.
