I'm located in MD and want to learn to carve tiki's. What is the best kind of wood to use since there is no palm to get ahold of?? |

Link up with some local woodcarving guys & talk to them about local varieties of wood that carve well. Chances are they'll also have some advice on how to find some, and help you with tool selection. I think they have cypress in MD and that works... Here's a link I saw that could be helpful: http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/f38/seeking-maryland-carving-club-39287/ |

If you're carving small like pendants you could try bass wood it's soft. That could be a good thing to start out with. |

Poplar carves easy, and takes stain very well. Basswood and Tupelo are common for duck carving, so they should work easily. [ Edited by: Unkl Ian 2012-10-28 19:47 ] |
