Ok, maybe I need to clarify:

Yes, glass and metal do expand and different temperatures. The soakings that I (and Swanky) are talking about are for the metal top only! You don't want to mess with trying to reach the right temperature for expanding and contracting GLASS. Why? Because the result of expansion and contraction of glass = B-R-E-A-K-A-G-E aka cracking your glass aka broken aka done for aka....well, you get the idea.

Also, putting your shaker in the freezer might work, but it probably really won't. Why? Because the metal tops fit OVER the glass. If you freeze the metal, it will contract = grabbing hold of the glass even tighter, which is what you don't want.

Now try this:

  1. heat water VERY hot (in a teapot would be best for better pouring control) on the stove.
  2. then spray the metal top around where the metal meets the glass with PAM
  3. run your kitchen sink with hot water and as the water heats up from the sink place the metal top of the shaker under the running water. Remember you have to slowly get the metal top up to temperature first with hot water from your sink.
  4. when the sink water has hit its temperature peak, now it's time to grab the "tea" water that should be now VERY hot.
  5. Hold on to the glass shaker upsided down in the sink (better use dishwashing gloves) with the metal side down. SLOWLY pour the teapot full of water on the metal ONLY.
  6. After thoroughly pouring the very hot water from the teapot over the metal give one last quick spray of PAM and gently tug the two pieces apart.

It has worked for me every time.
