My girlfriend and I live in western Massachusetts, are in our early 40s and are big fans classic cocktails, particularly those containing rum. Last summer on a visit to Chicago (my hometown) we were having a drink at Three Dots and a Dash and discussing what to do with our basement, which we recently reclaimed after a tenant moved out. We looked around at the bar and it all became crystal clear – tiki bar! Being fans of mid-20th century pop culture, cocktails, escapism, exotica, and kitsch, it’s perfect for our lives. I’ve drawn so much inspiration from all the photos of home bars posted on Tiki Central and I’m grateful for all the detailed information. I’m just getting started on our basement bar but will post regular updates and photos to document the process and maybe even provide a little inspiration to others. I’m not sure how long it is going to take but I have a plan and a name for the bar – Cosmic Coconut.
