I have always been intrigued by the Fiji Mermaids that would invariably be included in "cabinets of curiosity" and freakshows in podunk towns across the USA. The creepy critters conjured images of far off tropical places and mysteries unknown. What if the Fiji Mermaids had actually once been alluring little creatures, now rendered shriveled and ugly by the ravages of death and time.
