On this week’s Dr. Zarkov’s Tiki Lounge radio show we celebrated the birthdays of several of the generous musical artists who joined us on planet earth during the adamantine month of August.

“Lullaby of Leaves,” the classic written by Bernice Petkere and Joe Young, was vocalized by our Birthday Girl Ethel Azama for the vibes master Arthur Lyman’s floral LP: Leis of Jazz, with Alan Soares on Piano, John Kramer on Bass and Harold Chang on Drums and Percussion, recorded in 1959 at the Henry J. Kaiser Aluminum Geodesic Dome, Honolulu.

“Down by the Shack, by the Sea” was composed and sung by our August Natal Notable and is found on his selective CD: Don Ho’s Greatest Hits.

“Hilo Hanakahi,” the 1947 song by Hawaiian songbird Lena Machado, describing the beauty of Hilo and the majesty of Mauna Kea Mountain on Hawaii’s Big Island, was warbled in 2010 by our Birthday Girl Raiatea Helm with Keola Beamer on Slack Key Guitar and appears on the incomparable compact disc: Keola Beamer & Raiatea.

“Outer Space,” composed and performed by the legendary stride pianist and Birthday Celebrant Luckey Roberts on the 1958 lithesome LP he shared with Willie “The Lion” Smith titled: Luckey & The Lion – Harlem Piano, supervised by Nat Hentoff. This tune was based on Roberts’ earlier composition called: “Exclusively With You.”
