On this week’s Dr. Zarkov’s Tiki Lounge radio show we celebrated the birthdays of several of the generous musical artists who joined us on planet earth during the adamantine month of August.

  1. “Alekoki,” with the music composed by Royal Hawaiian Band Singer Lizzie Alohikea, Words by Prince William Lunalilo or King David Kalakaua, performed by our Birthday Boy, the guitarist Andy Cummings & His Hawaiian Serenaders, including Gabby Pahinui on Slack Key Guitar, David Nalu on Steel Guitar, Ralph Alapa’i on Ukulele and Joe Diamond on Bass.

  2. “Whee Ha Swing” was recorded by our Birthday Celebrant Ledward Kaapana and is found on the capacious collection: Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters – Instrumental Collection (Volume 1).

  3. “Lullaby of Leaves,” the classic written by Bernice Petkere and Joe Young, was vocalized by our Birthday Girl Ethel Azama for the vibes master Arthur Lyman’s floral LP: Leis of Jazz, with Alan Soares on Piano, John Kramer on Bass and Harold Chang on Drums and Percussion, recorded in 1959 at the Henry J. Kaiser Aluminum Geodesic Dome, Honolulu.

  4. “Down by the Shack, by the Sea” was composed and sung by our August Natal Notable and is found on his selective CD: Don Ho’s Greatest Hits.

  5. “Hilo Hanakahi,” the 1947 song by Hawaiian songbird Lena Machado, describing the beauty of Hilo and the majesty of Mauna Kea Mountain on Hawaii’s Big Island, was warbled in 2010 by our Birthday Girl Raiatea Helm with Keola Beamer on Slack Key Guitar and appears on the incomparable compact disc: Keola Beamer & Raiatea.

  6. “Outer Space,” composed and performed by the legendary stride pianist and Birthday Celebrant Luckey Roberts on the 1958 lithesome LP he shared with Willie “The Lion” Smith titled: Luckey & The Lion – Harlem Piano, supervised by Nat Hentoff. This tune was based on Roberts’ earlier composition called: “Exclusively With You.”

  7. “Big Long Slidin' Thing,” the song by Leroy Kirkland and Mamie Thomas, recorded in 1954 featuring Wynton Kelly on Piano and found on our Birthday Girl’s righteous retrospective: The Definitive Dinah Washington.

  8. “Dein Ist Mein Ganzes Herz,” written by Franz Lehar for the operetta: The Land of Smiles, played by the pluperfect pianist and our August Birthday Boy on his rapturous rarity: The Oscar Peterson Trio Live and at Its Best, recorded live in Lubijana, Slovenia, in July 1964, with Ray Brown on Bass and Ed Thigpen on Drums.

  9. “Swingin at the Daisy Chain,” recorded in 1937 by our Birthday Boy Count Basie & His Orchestra, including fellow birthday celebrant Lester Young on Tenor Sax and Buck Clayton on Trumpet, found on Mr. Clayton’s lively look back: Swingin’ With Buck.

  10. The Dizzy Gillespie classic “A Night in Tunisia” sung by our Natal Numinary Eddie Jefferson on his 1974 labial LP: Vocalease, with Mildred Weston and Conrad Buckman on Backing Vocals, Joe Newman on Trumpet, Billy Mitchell on Reeds; Mickey Tucker Piano, Sam Jones on Bass and Eddie Gladden on Drums.

  11. “Five Star” was composed by our Birthday Boy Jimmy Raney, who is heard here on Electric Guitar on this 1949 recording featuring Terry Swope on Vocal, Wardell Gray on Tenor Sax, Al Haig on Piano, Tommy Potter on Electric Bass and Charlie Perry on Drums, found on the bodacious box set: The Wardell Gray Story.

  12. “Billie's Bounce,” composed and played by our Birthday Boy Charlie Parker in 1945 with his Reboppers: Miles Davis on Trumpet, Argonne Thornton on Piano, Curley Russell on Bass and Max Roach on Drums, taken from the bopping box set: Boss Bird – Studio Recordings 1944-45.

  13. “When the Sun Comes Out,” inked in 1941 by Harold Arlen and Birthday Celebrant Ted Koehler, sung in 1960 by fellow August Birthday Boy Tony Bennett on his loquacious LP: Sings a String of Harold Arlen, with the orchestra and strings arranged and conducted by Glenn Osser.

  14. The Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol classic: “Caravan” vocalized by our Birthday Girl: Cyrille Aimee on her soigne CD: It’s a Good Day, spotlighting the talents of Sam Anning on Electric Bass, Adrien Moignard and Michael Valeanu on Acoustic Guitars and Rajiv Jayaweera on Drums.

  15. “How Long Has This Been Going On,” by George and Ira Gershwin, written for but removed from the 1927 Fred & Adele Astaire Broadway musical: Funny Face but used in the 1928 musical: Rosalie and the 1957 Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn movie: Funny Face, sung by our August Natal Notable Buddy Greco on his 1962 landmarkable LP: Body & Soul, arranged and conducted by Robert Mersey

  16. “How High the Moon,” composed by Morgan Lewis and Nancy Hamilton for the 1940 Broadway Revue: Two for the Show, sung by our Birthday Girl Patti Austin in July, 2003 at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, found on the superlatatious survey: Voices of Concord Jazz – Live at Montreux.
