I haven't seen Moana yet, but my wife has already asked to go see it, and a friend of mine who started his Aulani vacation yesterday also nudged me to see it. I also do the DVD / Blu-Ray thing at home mostly, and I agree that this really seems like it should be seen in a nice theater. I am a certified sailing and navigation instructor for the American Sailing Association, and from your write-up, know that a lot of the content in Moana will resonate with me personally.
