There's a lot of us here who don't have the luxury of a vibrant, modern tiki culture (West Coast) or the garage sale vestiges of a lost one (U.S. Midwest), but it's still within your reach with a little (or a lot) time and elbow grease. I'm not sure if you were joking or not when you said your DIY would have to include bamboo, but that is a serious option for you and your climate. There are several threads here and posts on YouTube about how to convert simple PVC pipe into a convincing, durable faux-bamboo. I look forward to seeing more of your posts here!
