I have found that, when using my phone, I take my picture AFTER I make sure the phone has detected the angle I'm holding it. Then it should take the photo, save it to memory, and then also properly display it and export it in the orientation which you intended. So --

I first aim the phone at my tiki drink so the phone is facing squarely in the direction of the subject material.
Then I quickly turn (re-orient) the phone to ensure its sensor registers my new and desired "up" and "down" orientation and then I take my photo.
