Wendy, the research I did suggests it's a "glaze fit" issue. That the glaze and the ceramic expand at different rates and that causes the glaze to flake off. On my Explorer mugs, I ended up replacing that glaze with another one. In the meantime, I have several with the old flaking glaze that I will try to re-fire and see what happens.
