So, I received my brand new re-issue of this exotica gem.."Polynesia" by The Buddy Collette Septet. I knew it was going to be odd, but, wow....such a strange album. Why was it even called "Polynesia"?
Funniest part to me are the liner notes that say "A. I. Groeg translated several Polynesian & Japanese manuscripts. These form the basis of the dark narrations & lyrics across the album." Like, Groeg spoke "Polynesian." The "Polynesian Suite", 13 minutes of poetry & music has literally nothing to do with anything Polynesian. In fact, many of the poem pieces could NEVER have been set in Polynesia. The four songs that make up side one are really just barely classifiable as "exotica."
Anyway, it's very DARK and it's interesting for sure...but I'm only add a couple tracks to my "Hawaiian Hi-Fi" station because that "Polynesian Suite" is just too morbid.
