Working with RF broadcasting equipment, I can recall several times when one particular transmitter kept having components blow for no discernable reason. Our engineer's best guess was that transients were making their way past the old surge protector and popping the occasional piece in the power supply. These days with delicate electronics everywhere, and a power grid that was designed and built patchwork over the last 100 years, everyone really should have surge protection built right into their switch box to save a lot of heartache and headaches.
