Sorry to read of those family problems and your own health issues. I too am a very keen gardener, and it is a great way to meet people. Although we don't have deer here, there were a few rabbits I've had to deal with, but bandicoots can be a real problem with their digging. They are not really eating the plants, but dig where the soil is wet for worms etc. This of course is where you have just watered your new plantings resulting in devastation.
