Just to be clear - the Friendship Shelf is NOT located in the bathroom correct? LOL
Filling some of the bookshelf space with decorations instead of books was a great way to reduce weight. You could still do a sort of soffit if you wanted. Just box in the upper shelf so the soffit is part of the door instead of the header. Also, I think the key to the fake books is to print you own spines and glue them to Styrofoam "books".
Those masks make great bannisters!
