A couple other side projects were carving a Moai head and making some syrup bottles. I am lucky enough to have access to a woods. I was able to get a couple of Sassafras logs to carve. This Moai head was my first attempt. If you don’t know about Sassafras is a common tree in the Midwest. Its soft and has an amazing smell when carved. You can make a lovely tea from its roots. I am not terribly happy with the base as I just round off the corners and made a simple stand. Hopefully on the next try I can get closer to neck and body shapes the original artists used.
