Welcome. I've been heavity into the tiki scene since 2000 and I can tell you every topic you mentioned can be a rabbit hole. Its fun though. Music is my specialty. I host the Quiet Village Podcast one of the longest running podcasts on Tiki Music. I also host a streaming internet radio statio called Quiet Village Radio. You can find both pretty easily out there. Here is my web page though https://digitiki.com as for the essentials, there are many many playlists on Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, etc. You can check those out for sure. But the essential artists are Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Lex Baxter, Gene Rains. You can start with them and expand out from there. If you ware also intersted in Hawaiian music (steel guitar) I would suggest Jerry Byrd as well as the Hawaii Calls albums. I am putting together an episode of Exotica essntials for the podcast as I write thsi. I hope to have it out in about a week. There are many current bands now making Exotica and many are very good. but for that classic vintage vibe I would suggest the artsits I listed above as starters. When it comes to mugs I'm sure many will give you advice. My 2 cents is to collect what you like. I kinda stay with collecting mugs from bars and restaurants that I've been to. That way they have a special meaning to me. Oner thing I suggest that is WAY fun is, of you live in a part of the coutry near one, you may like to attend one of the Tiki events like Tiki Oasis in San Dieog, Tiki Caliente in Palm Springs, Luau at the Lake in NY state, and host of others throughout the country. You will meet some wonderful poeple and artists as well as find some seriously cool stuff to spend all your money on LOL. Again welcome to Tiki. It is a fun community but like any, there are those that are more open and welcoming than others. You are definitely in the right place. Tiki Central started way before Facebook and all social media. It has a huge back history of topics and information from contributors over the years. Have a mai tai, kick back and enjoy. ALOHA |
