I must confess that I am one polynesiac who doesn't get the whole expensive tiki mug thing. At all. My favorite mugs are actually real preserved coconuts. I'm much more into the various tiki decor items. This ebay mug craze reminds me of an episode of "Amazing Stories" back in the day. This guy's mom harasses him for being such a pack rat and he eventually puts all his tons of junk, including lots of "worthless" face mugs into his vw beetle and drives off becoming a sort of bum for many years... the episode ends with his mug collection being auctioned off for hundreds of thousands and now he's a wealthy old man... I don't quite recall the point or twist of the show though, it was 17 years ago and why the heck do I remember it at all? Weird.
