I was watching Taboo: Sexuality last night. The part about the "third sex" of India, the hijras (eunuchs), are also believed to be endowed with a sort of mystical power to bless or curse, but are not necessarily revered because of it.

They must endure a great deal of ridicule and harassment. I believe the Native American berdache's life was perhaps not exactly so, but they didn't exactly get the silk-pillow treatment either. At least they were allowed to be married to female warriors, who themselves were thought to possess spiritual attributes of both sexes.
