Shrunken Head Art * Dirty Donny at Otto's Tiki Show pg4

Pages: 1 2 74 replies

T

I am starting this post after looking and reading those that have come before, some of which were about what place heads have in the tiki pantheon, well I like to believe that art is art for arts sake. And with some of the great peices done by Sam G, and Benzart I wanted to start a new thread that was just for Shrunken Head art of any kind, so if you have something please add it and to everyone else enjoy the heads.

Greg Smith used to do these and sell them through ebay, sadly I do not have any of the pictures saved from the more elaborate heads he did. I checked to see if he had any on ebay but he did not. The ones I have pictured are the ones he was going to do for me and charge $35.00 for. I still wish I would have gotten it, it is a real head turner to see.

That's a cool shrunken head, TT. I'd like to see the others. For the record, here are my 2 thus far:

B

Cool little shrunken head! And sam...that blue one is knocking me out! Let me see if I have any pics of some that I've done...

B

Show 'em off, Barnett. Something tells me you're hiding more killer pieces!

B

Little wooden purse (all the sides hasd stuff painted/lettered and I put a little mirror and fun fur inside, too!)...

B

Last one...MDO cut out....

How'd you know, Sam? Weird thing is, I've done bunches, but I don't seem to have many pics to prove it.

Hey, I even know what MDO is (or duraply - what is it "maximum density overlay" or something?) 1/2 or 3/8 in. thickness, good on 1 or 2 sides! I think we have pretty much the same background...

B

quote (I didn't realize how to quote someone until AFTER I posted...got it now...sheesh, I'm dumb)>>>>>Hey, I even know what MDO is (or duraply - what is it "maximum density overlay" or something?) 1/2 inch, 3/8 in. good on 1 or 2 sides! I think we have pretty much the same background...

B

Cool stuff Barnett. I'm leery of getting a haircut now after seeing the "A little off the top" piece you did. Where have you been Hiding , Or I should say WHY have you been hiding??

B

Benzart, I remember that title for a piece but for the life of me, I can't remember what that piece looked like! Usually I don't post many pics because I'm too floored by all the cool art everyone else posts!

here's one more...a friend of mine did this poster for a show we were in. I did the "from around the world" lettering...but the rest of the poster is all Mig Kokinda...

B

I should mention that Mig does his posters a bit differently...they're all hand cut stencils and spray paint! On this particular poster he did screen the black, but everything else is done in layers, from hand cut stencils. The guy amazes me...way too much patience. I've seen him hand cut all the lettering on some of his posters...it's key-ray-zee!!

B

Here are some of mine

This is all I have for now but will add a few more as I carve them.

Do drunken heads count?

Cool thread!

K

Sweet painting, Flounder!

T

I knew Flounder would get in here somehow, very cool man. Hey you finish that painting yet for that place?

Man I love shrunken heads.

I definitely want to paint more. Wonder if one would look cool on burlap?

Maybe we can start some other threads like this one, maybe Marqesas, Rarotonga, Moai...

That's a great idea Flounder...I'm really enjoying seeing all of this...by the way...have you thought of doing an embroidered bowling shirt of one of your designs??? I've got a friend who has several multi head machines and he does some great work...let me know, dude

great thread!!!...the shrunken head has always had a special place in my tiki lovin heart!!!

Here's a little scene with a shrunken head in a corner of our backyard jungle. I made the shrunken head maybe 10 years ago. It's sculpted of super sculpey over aluminum foil. Painted with acrylic and then it has a sprayed on urethane finish. You can't see it too well in the photo but the eyebrow hair was poked in before I baked it. Also there is string sewn in on the lips. Creepy hummmm. The hair is part of a cheap wig from a novelty store. I forgot where I got the beads, maybe Michael's. Anyway, it's held up just fine these past 10 years outside, and in freezing winters too! It was fun to make. The skulls are painted plastic models.

Lookin at this thread alone, the quality of work by everyone is astounding, I take my hat off to you all

[ Edited by: cheekytiki on 2004-07-26 09:37 ]

pariartspaul, that is some fine work man.
I love it.
Very realistic.
Some day when I get the chance I want to make one for myself.

That really is cool, pariartspaul. Those old 70's Vincent Price apple-heads are nothing compared to that!

Thanks too, cheekytiki...

B

Looks like we are coming up with some Fantastic shrunken heads. These are really great.

V

What about the Bomboras album "Head Shrinkin' fun" cover, I love it :

Virani that is great.

I love this photo. I especially like the the way the mouth is sewn together.

T

This is the text that was with this pciture. "The practice of shrinking heads was once common amongst the Jivaro Indians of Ecuador. It was a ritual that had been handed down through generations. The heads of slain warriors were valued as trophies or symbols of bravery. When a fighter killed his enemy, the victim's head was removed. The skin was then peeled away from the skull and hot stones and sand were poured into the cavity. The head was sewn shut and boiled in herbs until it had shrunk to the size of a fist. Ceremonial dances, feasts and songs accompanied the ritual!."
