What is the sound of Tiki?

OK, I discovered at Baxdog's party that many many musical styles could be construed as Tiki (and just as many most certainly can't!).

So, I ask you all, what is the sound of Tiki? Respond with your opinions, names, styles, et peter cetera.

What is the sound of Tiki?

It is the sound of contemplative silence.

I'd say, Exotica, Lounge, Surf, Beach sounds, waterfalls, rain, birdcalls, Buffett, Traditional Hawaiian music, some modern ... whoops? Did I say Buffett? Sorry, that one doesn't count.

The sound of an ax striking wood while chips whistle by your ears. The ocean and seabirds gently whispering in the background. Bamboo windchimes tinkling in the tradewinds. Ukes and bongos being played in the shade of a mangrove. Well, I guess you cant really here a shady mangrove, but it helps the setting. As for Music, I agree with what everybody else mentioned and will add a few: Eden Ahbez, Don Tiki, APE, Tiki Tones, Aquavelvets, The Shadows, Gabby Pahinui, The list could go on but I will stop here.

It's the splashing sound of rum being poured over ice cubes...the squeeze of the lime...it's the sound of condensation slipping down the side of your favorite Tiki mug or glass and then splashing the counter as you lift it to your lips to sip...and that first scent of the exotic just prior to the sip...the sounds of Tiki are many. ummm...makes me kinda thirsty. Think I'll go mix one up.

The sound of the bamboo beaded curtain rustling as you enter the tiki bar.

Glad to see that surf was mentioned. I would like to add one PHENOMENAL group that is all too often overlooked. That group is Tipsy. Their first album, "Trip TeaseL The Seductive Sounds of Tipsy," is composed almost exclusively of samples of old lounge records. The result is a half lounge, half down tempo electronica cocktail that is it at once retro yet timeless. This is an album that I have had since it first came out in 1996 and I have NEVER gotten tired of it. There have even been entire days when I have listened to nothing but this album. There have been other attempts to fuse the sounds of vintage lounge and modern electronica (such as Dimitri from Paris's "Sacre Francais," Luke Vibert & BJ Cole's "Stop the Panic," and the two volume s of Electro-Lounge from the Right Stuff) but Tipsy's debut album is infinitely more enjoyable than all of them. Even if you hate electronica, you will love this album!

One final thing, this isn't really specifically tiki as it is more just generally lounge, but it fits right in with a tiki bar, Vegas lounge, or a space station orbitting the earth.

tipsy's second album Uh-Oh is great as well, tipsy kick bottom!

I'll second Tipsy. They have been on my broadcast from day 1. I can't get rid of it. It's too good. I would add a few more in that vein like Groove Armada, but nothing works like Tipsy. Do they perform live? I'd love to have them at Hukilau some year.

Ah yes Tipsy, Good Call. I did a flash animation for a school project and used there tune Mr. Excitement for the sound track. The project had an outerspace bar setting, a thirsty three-eyed beatnik alien, and a Bartender Brain mixing up weird intoxica. All the crazy stuff that fills my warped melon when I listen to "trip tease"
The only thing missing was a titanium rocket tiki. Definately good lounging tunes with a twist electronic psychedelia.

I would imagine alot of members think it corny, but I really like listening to the 'hapa haole' stuff when I'm mixing 'em up and sucking 'em down.

Thor, in another thread (the dreaded "DUDE this Rocks") you asked for some hapa haole tunes. I would suggest a compilation album by Harry Kalapana and his Hawaiian Guitars; one such is 'Aloha Hawaii'. Some favorite cuts of mine on that CD are Ainahau, Eponika, E Maururu A Vau, and Honolulu Hula.

My youngest daughter 'hula's' and I have subsequently come to enjoy Tahitian Drum music (rhythm) lately.

You guys haven't nailed it yet...The TRUE sound of Tiki is....the sound of a rum drink being shaken !!!!!

There are some Hapa Haole tunes on my new CD, and some Tikis!

Tipsy performs live, although I'm not sure how often. They were at KFJC's listener apperciation party like, 4 years ago, and they also played some shows at Club Deluxe in San Francisco for the release of Uh-Oh!

They are definitely one of my favorite groups around today. Their sound is too modern to be called Classic Tiki Bar music, but they are very, very cool.

Combustible Edison's first few albums were very "classic" loungy but with a pretty swinging, upbeat sound. The last album "impossible world" was a good fusion of classic lounge with modern beats and sounds. (Are they back together again? I have heard rumors of them playing shows)

PS.. when listening to Impossible World for the first time, skip track 1. Although it's a good track, I don't think it's the best one to start off with.

For tiki lounging it's gotta be Martin, Les, and Arthur, for tiki carving it's Led Kaapana, Keola Beamer, and Bobby Ingano, for tiki surfing it's The Aqua Velvets, The Huntington Cads, and for everything it's The Mermen.....

Well, he wrote "Nature boy" although I have not heard of a recording by him. I have heard/read something about his "Island suite" or "Nature suite", which was recorded before Eden's Island. I don't think it's on CD at all.

The only other Abhez recording that I know of and have is "Tobago", which is an instrumental version of the "Eden's Island" theme. It was the b-side to "The old boat" 45. The reed instrument/shell sound heard at the beginning of "Eden's Island" is used to replace the vocal track throughout "Tobago". Added in is the sounds of the surf through a flanger, so you get this weird flange effect through the whole song.

If anyone tracks down anything else by Eden (CD or otherwise) please let us know!

Having lived in godawful Coalinga, California for a year, is HANFORD LEMOORE a reference to the only other two towns that give Coalinga a run for being biggest dump in the world?

I just mailed something from Ebay to "General Delivery, HANFORD, CA" this morning. But the weird thing was it took me a minute to clue in what I was writing... HEY, it's THAT hanford!!!!

I remember seeing the Hanford Lemoore exit on the way to or from Mr. Smileys house... (I think that's where we were going, piled into someone's car - possibly Hanford himself).

Seeing that sign warms the cockles of my heart!

I must make it my mission to find a similar sign in Canada where the town or street names make a fine alias for my alter ego... Queen Tecumseth sounds kind of nice, n'est-ce pas?
