Although the Hawaiian Inn has a poolside tiki bar that opens around 11 am and a bar in the showroom that opens at 5:30 pm, Pablus started a nice tradition of mixing some classic tiki drinks in his suite last year.

Because we are expecting a larger gathering for 2005 and because it is the right thing to do, we thought we would ask those planning on joining us to volunteer some ingredients towards a vintage recipe. We may also draft a few of you to help prepare this under the watchful eye of Tiki Central's master mixologist; Pablus Maximus.

We picked the Zombie concoction from the 1946 first edition of Trader Vics Book of Food & Drink. The book says this serves 60 people.

We need:

2 - 750 ml bottles of Meyers (dark) Jamacian rum

4 - 750 ml bottles - Puerto Rican (silver) rum. Baccardi is Puerto Rican, but I like Matusalem Platino.

1 - 750 ml bottle of Demerara 151-proof rum

2 - 750 ml bottles orange curacao

3 quarts lemon juice (Pablus wants it fresh squeezed so we need alot of lemons)

3 quarts orange juice (yep, fresh squeezed as well.)

1 quart grenadine syrup (a bottle of Trader Vics would be great)

2 ounces Herbsaint or Pernod (We've got the Pernod)

Please post if you are able to donate a bottle of booze or the juices we need. And, be sure to bring a mug. There will be a few other punches to sample, but we wanted to make one really big batch as well.

Wouldn't you prefer fresh squeezed grenades for the grenadine?

Let me take care of the citrus as well.
RustyKey is a citrus rancher.

I'll also be assembling one sweet-tart bowl - Basement Kahuna's CONCUBINE!
A real treasure.

...one bittersweet bowl of Navy Grogs....

...and something homemade depending on the weather.

And some chocolate milk for Flounder.

(grenades...that's a good one.)

I am so excited to see everyone again! :)

Ciao till then! :D

Glad you can make it Kipepeo! All TCers are welcome, including our lurking ohana.

As for Zombie ingredients, I will supply a bottle of Meyers and the Pernod. To make this work, the rest of you booze hounds need to post what you are contributing.
Mahalo.

I'm in for the Grenadine. Since Trader Vic's is in my neck of the woods, I should be able to get by there before the trip for a bottle. Any (TV) requests? Pablus?

Tiki Diva,
We'll be looking forward to finally meeting you and your husband. (Does he know about our secret e-mails?) It's great to have another couple in Orlando that are into tiki.
The initiation ceremony isn't too difficult either. All you have to do is show up.

King Neptune,
Please bring two bottles of Orange Curacao. I think the fruit is covered, although we will need labor to help squeeze the citrus on Saturday.
I scaled this recipe down to make a half dozen drinks on Friday night. It tasted fantastic, but it also kicked our a**. Please consider yourselves warned.

What happened to the weather? When I checked a couple of weeks ago it was 10-20 degrees warmer. I was thinking of bringing a swim suit. Now it's about the same as it was here last week. But a nice cold snap came in to make it a good change.

Quick question: Steve and I will be arriving on Saturday morning! We booked the room, and need to book for the show. When we book it, do we just say we are booking for two? Or do we say we are with a group? Are we all sitting together?

Excited to see you all again! It seems like The Hukilau was too long ago!

I am so looking forward to this. I can't really afford it. I have no vacation time at the new job so it's just unpaid time off, but, I need a nice vacation. I am very excited to be a guest at the party. To get my buzz on early and keep at cruise control all day and night.

What's the count on the number of parties? Maybe I could throw together a mix CD for everyone today. How many? There I go, making work out of this...no, fun. A gift for the ohana.

The forecast for the DC area this weekend includes 3 days of snow, and lows dipping down to 16 degrees F.

Fortunately, I fly tomorrow morning to Orlando, where I will experience a 35 degree temperature change. I am thankful for air travel in January.

I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at Julians and the Hawaiian Inn this weekend. I will bring along two bottles of Dave and Anna's mai-tai mix, and a winter thirst for tiki beverages.

ok, I didnt see any replies to my question, so we booked the dinner and show for just us two. We needed to reserve something, and hopefully we can all still sit together or close to each other, and so on! :)

I am really excited! But sad that our friend Liz (I Dream Of Tiki) can't go. She met Steve and I for drinks at The Mai Kai recently, and we had a blast! But then on her way home, she was in a car accident. She is fine, thank goodness! But it cost her beaucoup bucks to repair the car and stuff. So she can no longer go. :( Im so bummed! But still happy to see everyone just the same. :D

Liz! I will take lots of pics for ya, honey! Love you! :)

Sorry I didn't get back with a couple of you this week, but I 've been doing some tiki traveling with some west coasters in advance of the Hawaiian Inn party. The weather is warming up and it looks like it is going to be real nice this weekend.

I've got seating for 20 reserved at Julian's which should be plenty and the Hawaiian Inn has about 40 seats seat aside for our group which should be enough.

I'll post a note on the door of the showroom as to the location of rooms we are using for hospitality purposes. If you don't know what to bring and want to bring something, bring a mug to drink from and a bottle of rum.

Okay, I'm off to Daytona now.

Terrific tiki times abounded at our annual convergence in Daytona beach.

Where can this giddy gal begin???????? I'm basking in the afterglow........

Friday nite at Julian's was simply sublime. We had our own little corner of the Julian's universe under a piece of regal Witco illuminated by the huge tribal shield wall sconces. I think we set a record for how many people could scrunch together at 1 long table without needing birth control.
Julian's expert mixologists provided us perfect MaiTai's and we feasted on their sumptuous fare while luxuriating in quality time with favorite pals.
Vern, Vern, Vern, what can I say but you are a most delightful escort!
Pablus, always a titillating experience to see you, and Rusty, I thoroughly enjoyed swapping stories with ya.
Swanky, you look great and very happy. Good luck with your upcoming plans...all of them.
Lezley, you fox, we really need to spend more time together. Dave's a lucky guy (even without the Witco).......
Geoff/Marian you continue to grow more and more dear to me.
Great outfits Marian and Lezley. We were the bell-bottom-triplets that nite!
Kava King and beautiful Wahine, so good to see you again!! Glad you traveled down!
Sandra/Dan it was way cool to have "the inner circle" with me at out fav restaurant.
Sven and lovely Naomi, I loved sharing this treasure with you.
And everyone else, thanks for a peak party experience!!!

We experienced so much tiki culture last week with so many good friends it is almost too much to comprehend. Either that or I'm still suffering from the effects of the Zombie barrel.

That was INSANE FUN!!!!!!!!!

It was so fantastic! The dinner show, the zombies, the ocean, the stars and brilliant moon, the gorgeous mugs, the architecture of the hotel... but what our favorite part was, of the ENTIRE weekend, was getting to spend time with all of you.

What amazing beautiful people you are. Truly. I couldnt get enough of you. When we were leaving, I looked out the window of the car as we were pulling away that cold morning, and thought to myself, "Wow. I really miss them already!" I felt a little sad. But really happy to have these wonderful memories. :)

We will post pictures up soon! And Steve had such a fantastic time, that he is thinking about creating his own tikicentral account, so that he can post as well! I am really excited about that!

Guys, we came home to my little uke, and I said "Don't you want to play my uke? Now that I know that you know how to, so well?" His reply was something along the lines of NO, because now that he has played a REAL UKE, nothing else could possibly compare. And he wants one of the real thing! lol! He is hooked!!!!

I can't wait to see everyone again. I miss my tiki family!

Hugs and Tiki Kisses,

Lenore :)

As most of you know Sven and Naomi came in early and we were able to do quite a bit of touring the week before the Hawaiian Inn luau. We couldn't have seen and experienced as much as we did without help and support from quite a few people.

Because of that I want to extend special mahalos to Sven and Naomi for making the trip in the first place and for being such wonderful traveling companions; Tristan & Bree for meeting us at the Polynesian Resort; Kern & Pia for arranging everything at the Mai-Kai and to Cybertiki and Jo-elle for meeting us for drinks and dinner there as well; Fatuhiva and family for opening their home and showing us their fantastic mug collection; King and Queen NeptuneTiki for letting us stay overnight in the Palace of Witco; to Pablus and Rusty for hosting two nights of partying in their suite, entertaining us with their ukes and especially for mixing up that killer batch of Zombies; and lastly to Wayne & Teauila at the Hawaiian Inn for all of their continuing and gracious hospitality and aloha spirit towards our entire group.

And a most important and loving thank you to my wife Marian for letting me run around the state for a week while she handled things at home, and for generally being the indulgent and wonderful spouse that she is. Thanks honey!

Here are my pics from my short trip to Florida ..... there are very few pics of the Tiki Central people who attended, since Humuhumu did a great job with her pictures.

I flew in on Thursday afternoon, and I soon found myself at Disney's Polynesian Resort

I happened to find myself walking by the entrance to the luau show 10 minutes before the show started - felt it was destined for me to attend

A good show, but I was annoyed that I paid 15 bucks for a lousy drink, served in a carved coconut mug that was mine to keep - except that some damn tourist swiped it from the table when I was taking pictures of tikis after the show.

I wanted to visit the Bamboo Lounge, but it was closed that night, so I went to Wai-tiki instead - the big monkey mural upstairs is incredible (no picture yet)

Because I had never waken up to the sight of a giant orange, I stayed at a hotel with this view out the front door.

The next day (Friday) started with two rounds of golf at the Tiki Gardens Miniature golf course

That evening was the group outing to a great dinner and many rounds of drinks at Julians .... Here is fantastic Bre-elle, with the curved bar and the fantastic Julians mural behind her.

Back at the Hawaiian Inn, there are some great neon witco lights, which reminded me of a Dan Flavia neon light exhibit that I recently saw at the National Gallery of Art.

I really liked the Luau show at the Hawaiian Inn - it has a more homegrown feel than the overly slick Disney production, and they also offer 2 for 1 drinks during the second half of the show. If you consume the right combination of drinks, and sit next to the bubble machine, you will experience a quite dreamy and hallucogenic 'Tiny Bubbles' experience that even the Mai Kai and Disney couldn't match.

Thanks to Pablus and Rusty Nail for their ukulele music, and to all the others who bought ingredients for the great rum drinks, and provided the atmosphere for a great weekend.

I should have got HumuHumu to hold up this empty barrel, as it would then seem much more realistic by appearing to be twice as big. I think Pablus has one of these every Friday night.

And finally, one Route 1 motel sign that I passed on Saturday, which I encountered when I was hung over and missed the turnoff onto the barrier island.

Great pix Vern and Humu!

That Hawaii Motel sign is AMAZING... as is the RUM BARREL! Sorry I missed out on quaffing a little of the potion therein...

Yeah, that was so nice. I enjoyed the concoctions so much on Friday night that I had to lay off the sauce more or less on Saturday.

And I shot some nice slides of various artifacts and locales between Orlando, Jacksonville, Daytona and Fort Lauderdale. I will share some of the results of this Florida expedition on Friday night at Tiki Taix.

Come and see: Mai Kai views, Witco livingrooms, Daytona Tiki, and more!

Disclaimer!: I was merely posing in the WaiTiki men's room, Humu did not catch me with my pants down. And Naomi is just camera shy, she was with me all along. I invited the girls into there, but when we startd taking pictures, we were kicked out.
