Jaime Mendoza-Nava / Orgy of the Dead, anybody?

Pages: 1 6 replies

I

"Orgy of the Dead" may be completely unwatchable, except as cringe-factor background noise at a party, but exotica fans might enjoy its soundtrack. Well, fans of cheesy 60's strip tease music will enjoy it and I think that basically includes most exotica fans, correct?

So anyway, since I actually groove to some of the cheesy tracks on "Orgy of the Dead," I picked up the soundtrack. Indian chants, raunchy horns! Creepy cheeseball jazz! And Criswell! First rate!

Jaime Mendoza-Nava is the composer... and looking at IMDB, what a long and varied career he's had (From The Mousketeers to Ed Wood's bad porno to the incredible A Boy and His Dog).

I would actually like to explore his other stuff. Are any of you familiar with any of his other works? Can you recommend any? Steer me in the direction of some similarly exotic recordings?

Funny: I was watching "Orgy of the Dead" this evening--there is a DVD out with an interview with Stephen C. Apostolof. In the interview, he mentions that the idea for the "Hawaiian Dance" scene popped into his head when he visited a "Hawaiian place on Hollywood Boulevard" with "the dancing girls with the lights and the volcanos".

This doesn't really justify spending the time to watch this film (it is recommended only to fans of striptease or fans of REALLY bad movies), but it is a direct link to the Polynesian thing.

Glad to see there are so many high-minded, politically correct, "good art" fans on TC. I makes me feel good to know that I'm the only person around here that enjoys anything as base and repulsive to the masses as "Orgy of the Dead" for anything other than the soundtrack.
Allow me to suggest, for further listening, http://www.comfortstand.com/catalog/507/. This "remix" features actual dialog and background noise from the movie. Very interesting and even exotic in a non-exotica kind of way...

Well, how can you not love dialogue like:

"She pleases me! Permit her to live in the Land of the Snakes! Now I will talk to the Wolf Man, and the Mummy."

Yeah. Whatever.

"orgy of the dead" rocks... Criswell's goofy narration stuck with me for days after I saw the flick for the first time... cheese-matic
