I'm having a party and there's a couple of guests I want to freak out, besides I've always wanted to try this... seems rather japanese? I want to have a fishbowl on the tiki bar w/ fairly good looking but edible fish... after the guests have grown accustomed/attached to the little critters towards the end of the evening I want to pop them in my blender and serve myself (any any takers) a fishy bloody mary... to their horror and my omega-3 fatty acid level improvement. So my question is, if anyone knows, which of your pet store fish are edible? I'll wash them thoughouly of course and put them in a very clean bowl, and the alcohol should help to kill of some microbes. My gut's pretty hearty. Thanks, and give my regards to PETA! A friend of mine makes a "real" shrimp cocktail, and it's delicious... that's what gave me the idea. Maybe there is some pet sized fish that tastes delectible with the appropriate amount of vodka spices and zing zang? [ Edited by: kahukini on 2003-02-11 14:49 ] |

Just get regular Gold Fish aka Feeder Fish. We used to swallow them live all the time. The first one is a strange feeling but after you do it, the next 50 or so go down real easy. Helped pay my way through high school! We used to bring bags full of "feeder fish" to parties and all the dorks would bet us to swallow them. We'de leave rich, full and buzzed! Wedding receptions too! |

That's why I'm trying to make sure the fish are edible, so I won't get sick :) [ Edited by: kahukini on 2003-02-11 14:49 ] |

Oh! MY! GOD! Do the swedish fish, please. That's beyond sick and cruel and I can't believe you're serious. Maybe being from Alabama has something to do with it. Then again, I hear puffer fish is mighty tasty! |

I have a friend who was in a freak show and they did the whole swallowing house hold products bit, and how they used to find out if a thing was not poisonous was they'd phone up the national poison register and claim their child had swallowed whatever they were wanting to consume, and the helpfull people at the NPR would tell them if it was bad or not. So if you do phone whayever the american equivilent of the NPR is, can you record the call coz I'd love to hear the convesation.. |

May I propose an alternative method to freak out the guests? Get two fish bowls. One with fish is on the bar, the other just has water and is hidden beneath the bar. Guests all see the live fish. When they are not looking, switch bowls. The live fish will be safe under the bar and the water filled bowl is on the bar. Start the blender and tell everyone you just made a fish drink, they will look at the empty bowl and freak out. This alternative provides the requisite shock value and saves the life of fish. The tiki gods frown on the mistreatment of all animals. |

There's a dish they serve in Beijing called 'Minute Mouse'. The restaurant is lined with cages full of breeding mice, and your 'minute mouse' is a newborn mouse served alive in a little dish, along with a brandy. Makes the goldfish idea almost appealing. Trader Woody |

I doubt any fish are gonna hurt you. It reminds me of a friend of mine named Bonehead. Honestly. He was a huge, crazy punk. I saw him do any number of crazy things like stapling his willy to a table to make fun of the sissy ass piercing trend, in 1990 or so. Anyway. We crashed this frat party, and they were just scared enough they didn't throw us out. But Bone head upped the tension when he began grabbing the tropical fish out of the aquarium and eating them. I don't mean swallowing them whole, but chomping them up and sticking his tongue out. Bonehead was fun. Scary, but fun. |

In high school we would freak out people by putting our hands in the goldfish bowl and act like we ate them. It was really just a sliver of carrot hidden in our hand that we wiggled and crunched. Maybe you could do the same but drop them in the bass-o-matic. |

it's definitely something to see. the worst places in the south i've ever seen though are tunica, ms and somewhere off the highway southwest of atlanta (it was a dead ringer for the place lyndon johnson visited in appalachia)... [ Edited by: kahukini on 2003-02-11 14:49 ] |

If you ever host an Alabama tiki gathering at your place, I'll be sure to watch what I drink, or how much I drink! Poor fish! Can you tell me about that tiki place in B'ham...Tiki Bob's Cantina or something. Have you ever been there, is it terrible, etc? |

"tiki bob's" in birmingham is not tiki - it's a dance club decorated in high redneck riviera style & serving the finest drinks you can make with beer and plastic cups. It is the perfect place to go if you want some underage tail. That's what I hear. [ Edited by: kahukini on 2003-02-13 12:01 ] |
