Those of you who are into the South Pacific musical may want to catch 'South Pacific in Concert From Carnegie Hall' on PBS tonight - it is a 2 hour version of a truncated South Pacific musical, starrring Reba McEntire, Alec Baldwin, and Brian Stokes Michael

Here is a review of the program from the Washington Post

so mix a pitcher of mai-tais, and take a sip whenever someone mentions Bali Hai.

From the review:

"Bali Ha'i," one of the least clever of the songs, is unfortunately the one that gets the most reprises...
Blasphemy!!!

I thought the show was pretty good. It wasn't quite the same as seeing a full theatre production, with multiple sets, costumes and lots of dancing and choreography, but I thought the music was pretty good. The music was with a full orchestra, so it is a bit more lush than many of us may be comfortable with. I had recently bought new stereo speakers, and this was easily the best South Pacific music I had heard -- I kept turning the volume higher and higher.

Reba McEntire was actually quite good. The character Nelly in South Pacific is a nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas, so Reba's southern drawl really was perfect for the dialogue, and I thought she did a great job overall, and after watching her on stage, I wouldn't mind at all being stuck on some South Pacific island with her.

The show is available on DVD and CD - here is a review of the CD from a local DC website dedicated to live theatre.
