Hey all I am thinking of getting in and making some hand made tiki mugs. I think it would be cool to use something like this: http://www.magicsculp.com I want to avoid the whole kiln thing (like traditional ceramics) so I can do it all myself at home. I will sculpt/carve it, Primer it, hand paint it and detail, clear coat. I am after a food quality clear coat that can go over the paint. It is likely that the paint will be enamel as I will probably use pinstriping paint. Any help is appreciated! |

Aloha Hewey - I dunno if there is such a thing as a food safe clear coat for polymer and epoxy clays. I'd worry about any toxins leeching out of the epoxy through the clear coat. On the other hand, I do know that MagicSculp is the BOMB! I absolutely love that stuff. Here is my 2004 Jacob Marley Halloween costume made with paper mache and magicsculp: Good luck with your clear coat search, and I'd love to see anything you put together with magicsculp! VanTiki Edit - just found this place with a brief google search: http://www.safenontoxic.com/buy.html I dunno if they have anything that would work for you - but they specialize in non-toxic coatings [ Edited by: VanTiki 2006-05-31 11:37 ] |

How about make a mug that is display only. Yes, that defeats the purpose of a tiki mug, but then again people use ceramics for mugs. |
