question about knots for binding, which do you use, whats a good resource?

I ran a search and only came up with knots in regards to floats. Great thread and info. Here I am hoping to get into other roping issues.
I have run into binding some stuff with the lamps and furniture i have made. The one or two knots i can do are not the best, and in some cases i cheated by using glue on a weak knot. Lets talk about knots: knots for tying off a binding around a bamboo pole, or like on the bottom of some of Gecko's carvings, for that matter correct binding, any useful knots for tying off more natural ropes used in lampmaking, etc. My guess is BambooBen is the man on these techniques, can you help a brother out?

I would not use glue to hold rope/knots. Instead I use a 50/50 mix of zinsser bulls eye shellac, half amber half clear shellac. The knot will not come out once you do this so make sure you like your configuration before you paint. This method will help hold rope together, plus it gives the rope an old amber look. I also use this mixture on my bamboo/ratan stuff for that old look, And you get the added bouns of sealing your bamboo/ratan.

See this is how it looks when you paint with shellac. The hat on the right has shellac. I do not recommend shellacking antique furniture. This may make the resale value of antiques go down.

I just do what works the best at the time. (You learn through trial and error.) Tiki has no rules. It's always different. Absorb everything and use what you need when the time is right.
