The original question was relevant at the time.
The activity during late October through Early December had tapered way off.
Now things seem to be up again.

If this thread has done anything to stimulate discussion then it has served its purpose.

That's a good question. Does this happen every year around this time? People getting ready for the holidays and the weather getting colder may be slowing TC down. New years may be the jump start.

Has it slowed down? I mean, in order to keep from having more than 3 pages of new posts every time I log on, I have to check TC several times a day. That would indicate to me that it's, at least, not dead.

Are you looking for certain topics or threads that you aren't finding now, but have found in the past? Anything more specific we could be discussing that we aren't?

Nothing seems to generate the same amount of interest as a fight.

Then after the fight nothing else compares to the bad taste in the mouth that keeps people away for good.

It seems to be turning into less of a social forum and more of an artisan and marketplace type of forum.

Matt, to answer your question... I dont know.. but each year it seems to be slower and slower.

It is not a question of getting slower, it is a measure of getting smaller. There are not as many mysteries out there any more. Most of the mugs have been found, cataloged, and posted. Most of the matchbooks and menus have been bought, ebay is running dry. There is just not as much new information being introduced. And most of the information being introduced is new.... New carvers, new recipes, new music.

So it is not slower, it is just smaller bits of information coming along to fill in the few remaining gaps in 'the big picture.'

I skim topics and read what interests me. And, the topics that interest me are getting fewer and further between. In that respect, TC has been slowing continually for a while.

I think that last photo posted to "Tiki Finds" should be highlighted on the left in the "What's Hot" section. Then some jerk will post porn there for fun and it'll ruin it for everyone...

I think the freaks have all turned pro.

I like pictures of events and always have.
It's one of my favorite things about TC.

And the drink recipes, that's one of my favorite things too.

Oh, and the carvers. God knows I love 'em and they know it to when I venture in there to praise them or read them a story.
Yep, that's a favorite thing.

And the music forum. I mean, Waitiki posts in there... that's one of my favorite things.

And ohana is great to give and take a little love. That's one of my all time favorite things.

Marketplace - not so much.

But bilge - I mean... yeah... suicide sam's drunk posts are one of my favorite things.

My most favorite thing of all is to get together with people I've met here, like my last birthday at Trader Vics with Kava King and Queen and BK and Sliver Surfer and their lovely ladies. That's the tops and the TC message board feeds that fairly consistently.

I noticed a significant drop off in posts after Hukilau. I think people just go on tilt at Hukilau and need a break for a while. I know I did. MM, you've brought it up before about TC going underground. And I brought it up recently with the "newcomers please read BOT before posting" thread. At that point, there seemed to be a lot of posts, but much of it was of a fairly low quality. Some people just come on and start posting all over the place without taking the time to read and learn first. And some previously active people seem to have just faded away from TC for one reason or another (KailuaGeoff for example). High quality discussions are rare now. Tiki Kiliki's recent Mai-Kai post is an excellent example of the kinds of posts TC needs to stay alive, but finding anything old-that's-new to discuss is getting tough. Maybe after Sven's next book...

The place runs itself pretty well. Ebbs and flows.

I noticed this too. I just posted in Collecting and if you watch the days of post they go like: 1 1,2,3,5,7days,14,23,2 months. The Tikifarm name contest was a big boost. And yes, more event pictures are certainly fun, and with event, the best improvemtns with the 3D viewing are great.

Because its slow, I have been trying to go off and create some tiki. This keeps me away and soon , I will have a lot to show but probably after Christmas.

How about a naming contest for like a mug or something. :wink: I kid... I can't help it...

There are probably lots of reasons for the slow down MM; holidays, politics, people moving on to the next thing etc etc. I still dig tiki as much as ever but finding the time to keep up with everything and everyone on TC as well as regular life really tough. Throw in the trials of everday livin' and it gets to be next to impossible.
I don't post nearly as much as I used to either for several reasons. Some partly due to comments made on the flaming posts, but mostly I dont post because of not having anything new to add to the threads and time restraints. I still hang out in bilge and post frequently because some very clever and funny stuff pops up and there is a little more of a light hearted attitude down below. Also, I don't have to think about if my post or comments are not tiki enough or on topic. I still browse the other TC forums regularly and when I come across something of interest I check it out. I still keep up with a lot of TC peeps via the other means like the phone, events and gatherings (both tiki and un,) email, IM, myspace, smoke signals, blogs and my own tasty brand of spam.
Tiki Central still remains one of my favorite groups to be a part of and some of the folks I have met here have become really great friends. I don't think the passion for tiki and the friendships made from meeting fellow tiki aficionados both on TC and at events has slowed down. The tiki scene and TC are continue to get bigger and it keeps morphin' all the time just like everything else around us.

It will be interesting to see how it all keeps evolving.

That's why I was hoping my new book would come out this fall...it WILL be a shot in the arm, I promise. But then, maybe not in the same way, to everyone. The islands of Tiki have become charted to a larger degree, the first wave of discovery is over. Nothing is as sweet as the first moment of coming upon something completely new, and for all of us, Tiki was just that, at one point or another. It has become hard to imagine the rarity of the term, or image, nowadays.

But that goes only for a small amount of people, really, maybe call them the first TC generation. Outside of TC, there is a whole world of people still to be initiated into the cult, and everyday a few are, not necessarily here, or through the BOT, but they are. And for them, even though original Tiki places are still disappearing and getting fewer, even the little that remains is revelatory.

Because the loss of newness does not mean that the inherent qualities and reasons why we caught the Tiki fever initially are not still present: The artistry, the humor, the concepts, the fun, the archetypal power of Tiki are all a testament to the human spirit. There STILL is amazing stuff out there. I have concepts for 4 or 5 more books (not ALL BOT size!) that I would like to do, Tiki willing. If I could make a living at it, I would just do that. I am, for obvious reasons, a lifer.

I am eternally grateful to TC and its Ohana, and thus will stick around here more than anywhere else, mourn the passing of the elders, accept the ignorance of the newbies, and try to guide the flock that goes astray, appreciative or not.
