Tangaroa - Yes, it is a postcard. I picked up mine a few years ago at a postcard and paper show here in Denver. The guy charged me ten bucks for it, kind of steep for a chrome card at a p&p show (don't laugh too hard Sabu, I know some of the cards you get off eBay can be pricey).

I'm not laughing - ten bucks is a lot to pay at a postcard show. I probably would have gritted my teeth and paid it too.

That postcard makes me more wistful than most. Can't you picture wandering about that dealer's booth back then knowing what you know now? And I can only imagine how inexpensive those carved tikis would have been. I really need to find a copy of that postcard on Ebay!

I finally decided to start buying Sambo's postcards (photos of the restaurants - not the cartoon sets) & was horrified to discover my competition on Ebay! I mean, jeez, they are postcards fer christ-sakes!!!

I've noticed that the collectors of Wildwood Crest, NJ postcards are manic as well.

That is a great postcard! I went to the OC Fair in the early 70's but definitely don't remember tikis there at that time.

One of the things I would like to collect but don't dare to, is vintage Halloween postcards...the older ones from a hundred years ago can go for some shocking prices.

My dad was on the State Fair Board and also on the Board of the Orange County Fair back in the 60's and 70's. He also was friends with Bob Teller...who created and ran the Orange County Fair Swap Meets (my dad was Chief of the Newport Beach Fire Department). When dad passed away, as my brother and I were going through all his personal effects, I was hoping to find some records or something from the Fair and fairgrounds. But there was nothing and he must have pitched everything long before he died.

My bother and I worked the Lion's Club Corn-On-A-Stick booth every year at the fair there (my dad was involved with them too). I remember that tiki booth, and I think it was a regular at the fair into the '70s. But I really didn't pay it much attention back then.

1960’s
From 1960 to 1968, the Fair had a Hawaiian theme. The Fair queens became Aloha Queens, and Hilo Hattie was at the Fair in her Hawaiian review. Agricultural exhibits became a major thrust of the fair. A championship rodeo became a part of the Fair in 1962 and in 1966 a new arena with a covered grandstand was completed. Entertainment in the 1960s included the Lennon Sisters, Glen Campbell, Monty Montana, Lou Rawls and the Authentic Ballet Folklorico. A push button phone was presented by Pac Bell in 1963, and in 1968, when the Fair theme changed to Yesterday Meets Tomorrow, boats and recreational vehicles were new features. A scale model of Apollo 11 was featured in 1969 as the era ended.

p.s. Funny thing is that my Mom ( Ba), Eli's daughter, went on to become the marketing manager of the OC Fairgrounds most of the 80's. Small world.
