What would you be doing instead?

I spend a LOT of time here and when Im not here Im pursuing other aspects of my tiki interest.

If TC did not exist and you never "happened" into this hobby what do you think you would be doing with all that time?

What hobbies or interests would you still be pursuing that you dont pursue anymore? What friends or nieghbors would you have closer ties with?

I think about the big gaping HOLE that would be in my life. YOU?

• I would probably mountain bike more
• Surf more often
• Take more camping trips

Interesting question... before I had tiki, I was very into gardening. Even made big ol' Critiki-esque databases about it. Now that I'm doing the apartment-living thing, I'm not likely to get back into it for a while. Though I have been eyeing our patio for growing some mint....

I still garden a lot(in the spring-fall mainly), I'd probably garden even more, quilt more, and do a lot more painting.

I'd probably decorate my home in a northwoods cabin style. I still may dedicate a room to that - but maybe if I hadn't found tiki, I might not have thought of going so over the top.

I'd probably be more active in our home brewing process.

I would be collecting Owl Mugs, carving large wooden owls, and going to Owl Central events at rustic, lodge-themed restaurants with fake snow on the roofs.

I have serious impulse control problems when it comes to shopping, especially when it's tiki-related. I'm perpetually broke because I can't seem to stop buying mugs, Shag prints, etc.

My New Year's resolution this year was to shop at Oceanic Arts at least once a month. This is the longest I've ever been able to stick to a resolution.

I'd have more time to write. I finished a manuscript just before my first Oasis. Never submitted it to a publisher. Haven't written anything since then.

I think I'm happier this way though.

I'm kind of the opposite of Tiki-Kate. I'd have extra money to spend on other things, based on all the trips to Hukilau and other events I've taken over the years.

Who knows .... without tiki, and without Hukilau, I might be going to Key West every year and listening to lots more Jimmy Buffet. There is a potential movie here -- 'It's A Wonderful Tiki Life', where we are suddenly inserted into a life without tiki, and realize how horrible that might be.

If all my tiki decor vanished, and there was no more tiki to be found - how would I decorate my tiki room? Well, I recently decorated another room in my home with a space theme, so I would likely have some other mid-century decor. Perhaps I would be into big-eyed paintings even more than I am now. Maybe I'd just appreciate the sudden emptiness of my now-empty tiki room, and go the Buddhist monk Zen minimalist route.

If not for Tiki, I would still be collecting Navajo rugs, Hopi pottery, and turquoise jewelry. I would be spending my vacations in Arizona and New Mexico instead of Hawaii. Those other things were my passion for many years. Then my first trip to Hawaii changed everything, and I was hooked.

I'd finally get enough sleep! :lol:

The same thing I'm doing now and was before I joined Tiki Central; collecting Hawaiiana, listening to good music and pursuing an interest in '60's pop culture. I was always into to the SoCal thing and when I met my current wife Sally, who started out surfing in San Diego in the '60's and then moved to Hawaii for the next 25 years she introduced me to a whole new level of the culture, the art...the style. I must admit though, I never owned a tiki mug or concocted a suffering bastard before coming to TC...so I guess my answer would be...I'd be drinking boring drinks out of boring glasses!

I've been collecting & decorating in this style since I got my first apartment way back in the 70's. Now I know I'm not the only nut. I didn't know it was called Tiki back then - I just liked the way Polynesian restaurants looked & tried to recreate that at home. My brother used to say he felt like he was on Gilligan's Island when he came to visit.

I do, however, owe a debt of gratitude to Hanford and all the Tiki Central people for bringing me into the modern age of the internet. Until I found this place I was very leery of cyberspace - but I feel safe here and have had countless hours of fun. Geez, now I feel guilty for letting my Grand Membership lapse.

..i guess I would still be doing the same thing I am now..I was into pop culture and tiki before I found TC, and if it TC disappeared tomorrow, I'd still be "in to" what I'm in to.......just gotta keep on truckin'!!

I was into the "island" thing since I was a little boy. (Yes there was such a time.)
I got my first tiki very young and was indoctrinated into Trader Vics and Kahiki and all that.

However, Tiki Central helped give shape to the mish mash of visions that were lingering around.
It helped give purpose to what was already a very nice Polynesian collection and it gave focus to the design of the Lagoon Lounge which was already in progress when I discovered you freaks.

In fact, it was in the decision to build this lounge that I began searching for ideas and found tikicentral.com and just started looking at photos and thinking - "it CAN look like a Trader Vics!"

So, to answer your question.
I might be reading more.
But I consider the time spent here worthy investment into the friendships I have developed and the pleasure I've had.

I might be doing more music.
But maybe I'd just be watching more crappy TV and wishing for some cool hobby to fill the space.

I think I'd work on my house more. I really need to remake the upstairs bath....

Or maybe start an aquarium.

I have always been into decorating every room in my house to some theme...and already had my bamboo bar and shelves, so would have still done tropical in that room. Was already into collecting drinkware and such. Would have never had a Mai Tai though as I am more of a gin gal. I would have continued to collect exotica music (not knowing the name of the genre), but probably not have as many CDs as I do now. Would have still purchased a Vibraphone and may have been further along in my lessons. Would have been posting on my other boards more.

I was very happy to find TC....as it helped me to tie a lot of my passions together and opened my eyes to tikis and mugs and so many great artists here.

I'd probably go back to hanging out in bingo parlours and hitting on old ladies.

I would probably spending more time working on my model railroad. Which has suffered since my interest in tiki and anything that resembles it. Either that or join a star trek fan club... wait I'm part of one already... I mean I would spend more time in my lodge.

If TC did not exist, in the morning I would be back reading the newspaper and at night I would be back reading my porno books....

More mountain biking, less drinking, lots less. Prolly too much Bali/Indo mass produced tikis and not enough (none) of my own. And none of your album frames.

I'd have more money to spend on the other things I collect: tattoos, vintage pin up magazines, old cars.

Um....I'd be watching more monster movies...?
