Thinking of visiting the Knossoss temple in '08.
I know - not tiki, but ancient, precontact culture.
However, the beaches look terrible, rocky and devoid of palm trees.

Am I completely wrong?
Anyone been?

And I was dissapointed to find Hawaii had such a lack of Olive Groves
Greece has beautiful beaches, you will just have to avoid the tourist ones.

Errr... doesn't pre-contact refer to Americas pre-Columbus?

Crete is home to the oldest civilisation in Europe - Minoan - fascinating. Wild mountains in the interior, rocky beaches with seas a hundred shades of blue and millions of olive trees but I can't remember any swaying palms and talcum powder sandy shores...

Try http://www.greeklandscapes.com/

But definitely take the Cheekies' advice and do your homework on the beaches to avoid the crowded ones.

Hi,

I,ve been to Crete several times. In fact i went this year. I always stay on the south of the island in a small village called Agios Gallini . Its touristy but i've never been peak season so the place is just fine.

Not really any palm trees unless you wanna count the ones that have been planted recently . But expect Olive groves and lots os wild Goats.. Oh, and naked Germans if you stray onto the wrong beaches .. lol

Personally i really like the place.

The Samarian Gorge is worth checking out, although its 10 miles long and a whole days walk on stoney ground. The Scenery is that of the old '60s Sinbad Movies. We made a movie , feel free to watch it here :
