Valentine's Day Gripe

Pages: 1 9 replies

I can't think of anything less romantice than Valentine's Day.

Guys feel compelled to buy candy, flowers, jewelry or worst yet, stupid giant red and white stuffed animals. How romantic can the day be for a guy when it places a huge guilt trip on them to spend money in order to show their love? Even worse, having to spend all that money just to get laid.

All this pressure on poor guys, flooded with television commercials, billboards, flyers, advertising to buy, buy, spend, spend. Flowers get marked up. Restaurant have special Valentine’s Day meals at over-inflated prices. Feeling obligated to purchase a Valentine’s Day Gift is like getting a Summons for Jury Duty. It’s a duty you have to fulfill. Gees, how romantic is that?

Bringing home flowers, a card, a gift, to your significant other on any other day, "just because", I believe is way more thoughtful and romantic.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a the Bah-Hum-Bug of Valentine's Day. Celebrating love is great, but when was a simple expression of love not enough. The best things in life are free!

Marry me.

I got my girl some sci-fi prints, and she got me a pith helmet :D :D Neither of us spent much, but we both got something we really love. Not some crappy flowers that will be dead in a couple of weeks...

Not to mention, on Feb 14th, those crappy flowers are priced at eight times what they'd cost on any other day....

I was delightfully surprised to find a smattering of packages from Amazon.com on my front porch...purchased by me for me. No hearts, candy, or flowers...just zombie decor items to use at Oasis in August. I feel soooo loved. :D

While I generally agree with you, some people are true romantics and love getting into the corporate holiday of love. =)) Kinda like Christmas. Many people like the whole idea of brotherly love and world peace that Christmas brings. A little snow in Los Angeles wouldn't hurt either! haha! Why the Christmas theme isn't practiced year round baffles me. But I still like the time of the year even though Jesus wasn't actually born on that day.

So if it means taking their honey out for a Valentines day dinner or doing something special on Valentines day, even if it's just a quiet dinner at home with a card and some flowers, then so be it. Some of these things are little prices to pay to have a happy home life and a happy wife =))

(Those of you that are married know what I mean  )
