Anyone watch Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations last night? He was touring Hawaiian restaurants and ended up at La Marana, supposedly the last REAL Tiki bar (under the flight path!). It looked GREAT! |

I happened to catch the show. When I saw that he was going to be in a tiki bar, I braced myself, figuring the studied tackiness would send his cynicism into overdrive. To my pleasant surprise, he really dug the whole scene (particularly the high-octane rum drinks). [ Edited by: Tiki Zen 2008-03-04 15:01 ] |

Thanks! I missed the first 15 minutes of the show (watching Family Guy or something!) Glad I got to see the t-shirt bit and the Puka Dog - I want one now! |

I saw the show - it was pretty good... definitely worth watching. The Tiki bar scene took place at La Mariana in Honolulu - he had a couple drinks with Don Tiki (out of Gecko and Tiki farm mugs). Gotta say - the segment from the Big Island was a little strange... Pakalolo Man BTW, in this episode Bourdain bought a vintage Aloha shirt for $3,000 - wow! |

expense report! heck i'd put one on the company tab too! the bartender at La Mariana was a lot more friendly than ours was, and he garnishes! (not so much with the grumpy Chinese 'tender). we've eaten at New uptown Fountain and Ono ~ great food! |

He has the best food/travel show on TV today--bar none!! I love the way he looks at the world and his wonderfully irreverant sense of humor. I have that episode taped on DVR and was going to watch it tonight! Mustang Island Tiki |

His show No Reservation is great, if you can catch old episodes of A Cooks Tour, that is a great show too. |

If Anthony Bourdaine (sic? Too lazy to check tonight!) came to the Big Island and didn't go visit Kenichi Pacific, he's done a disservice to taste buds everywhere. Kenichi is easily our crown jewel- albeit an expensive crown jewel. I love Anthony B and his books- have yet to see his stuff on video, but I'm sure it's great. |

T, where is Kenichi located? I haven't been to the Big Island in a few years but don't remember the place. Believe me, I've been around that Island looking for GOOD food and aside from the ocassional off-the-beaten-path hole-in-the-wall restaurant I haven't found anything to write home about. How's the weather today? I'm SOOOOOOO homesick for an island I can't wait to make my home! I cried when we left the last time - it makes me want to cry now! |

I thought it was weird that he goes all the way to Honolulu and eats a hot dog in a fast food place. Usually love his show. I was surprised too that he thought Hawaiian food meant overly sweet and colored with red food dye. I'm glad he emphasized that he was wrong about that. Definitely going to the Mariana (sp?) on my next visit. BTW, the Lava House survived the lava surge mentioned at the end of the show. |

Oh goood, I sure hope they did let the guy move back into his house? "Forcibly removed" sounded bad! I heard there was a store owner at Mount Helens who got to go under with his place... |

I heard he had lived there all his life, and it was "If the place goes, I wanna go too." Same with that guy by Mount Kilauea, he had built his house with his own hands....I respect that. |

Very different scenarios - when Mt. St Helen's went, a good part of the top of the mountain (including Spirit Lake and Mr. Truman) was blasted into dust. Kilauea lava isn't violent - it moves slowly but inexorably downhill in relatively thin floes, burning everything in it's path. That guy would have gotten cut off from land access - if he wasn't roasted, he would have been trapped with no water, in full sight of onlookers and news cameras. There would be incredible pressure to save him and some poor bastards from the fire department or Army would have had to risk their lives flying a helicopter into that heat and gasses. Not a good option. Oh, and Puka Dogs is good, but let's be honest - the local favorite is Costco. $1.50 for a hot dog and a soda - can't go wrong. [ Edited by: Koolau 2008-03-09 23:49 ] |

Two weeks ago Kilauea finally took the last home at Royal Gardens. Jack Thompson who owned the home and B&B called Lava House was in this No Reservations. At the end of the episode Bourdain says Jack was evacuated a couple weeks after filming. I guess it was a false alarm. The woman who accompanied Bourdain to Jack's said there was a 100% chance that Jack's place would be consumed by Kilauea. It took 29 years. ETR |
