best bet is to call down there and find out directly....no sense risking being decieved about the actual time and date cause someone else wants to skunk the rest of us by giving false info just to get a jump on the goods.....

The 15th is a Sunday, right? In that part of the country, odds are the auction won't start until mid-afternoon (after everyone's been to church and had their Sunday dinner).

Okay. So I found the date and time. Out of the goodness of my heart, and because I believe in the communal tiki socialist spirit, I am going to post it here for all of you vultures. BUT, in return, I merely ask that you bloodthirsty scoundrels allow me (or my representatives at the auction) a fair chance to purchase just ONE killer tiki relic - preferably one of the OA poles - from the place. Just one. I think that's fair, right?

nice try..but the auction for the decor is on the 15th..the auction for the restuarant equipment and fixtures is on the 23rd....both auctions draw 2 different types of people which is why they separated them...otherwise the auction would drag on for hours and hours gettin through all the stuff.....for example, folks lookin for a new deep fryer for their restaurant may not care for a tiki fountain and would rather not have to suffer through tiki auctions to get to the fryer..the reverse is true too....i wanna get to the goods quickly and then get the hell back to chicago....

hmmm..i just checked the guthrie auctions website..it appears you may be right and that both auctions will now be held on monday june 23rd...bad news for those of us that were hoping it would happen during hukilau weekend to cut out some of the competition!!..anyway, they provide a list of tiki stuff that will be auctioned off ....you can view it on their website ..i'm gonna call the auction house now and get to the bottom of this mess once and for all....

..okay..it's official..monday june 23rd at 9 a.m......i just got off the phone with the auction house...the date was moved back due to an illness in the family..to view the list of items for auction visit the guthrie auction house website....see ya there suckers!! har!!!

..the real question is..who will have the money, the fortitude and the resolve to go the distance??? ...there can be a thousand people at this thing, but if they are not willing to spend alot, what difference does it make how many show up?? I talked to a lady at the auction company the other day. As Tipsy said above, she told me that due to an illness in the family, the tiki auction had been moved to the 23rd. She also said that there will be two rings going but that all of the tiki stuff will be in one ring. Some of the tiki stuff will still be installed as it was because it shows better that way (think posts with thatch). I am having mixed feelings about the date change because I too was counting on everyone being at the Hukilau...visions of $20 tiki's. The upside is that things worked out that I can now go to my first (and last) Hukilau. That is also the downside as I will be poorer and there will be more competition.

On a side note, maybe we should try to connect the TCers who are going to the auction the night before at a local hotel and attempt to make each other too hung-over to show up at the auction.

well ,ya know? on second thought i just may go. sounds like it could be fun. too many tiki trinkets, is ,almost enough.and it helps to keep you ebay snipers honest.

...it'll be fine....might as well show up, cause it sounds like there will be alot of smaller items too, beside, it'll be fun to hang out there all day with other tiki folk, like me!!!....

I don't anticipate any folks flying in from the coasts for this....especially on a monday, in the middle of nowheresville, illinois....we may have a few folks from the midwest that are going to hukilau show up, but they'll have already shit their load on limited edition mugs and prints....they won't have the scratch to throw down on the big stuff.....

Seriously, I'm upset that they moved the auction. I had already arranged travel, and now cannot go. So I have to send a rep to bid for me.

Too bad Tom won't be there to make cocktails while the bidding is going on. He's a great bartender!

i can not belive ,in 2008 this auction house does not have pics.

Word is the prices were crazy. Higher than most everything was possibly worth on Ebay or anywhere... I may not get that piece of the place I wanted...

i didnt think some of the prices were crazy, just fair market value....your not gonna get a steal of a deal on a witco piece when theres 30 or more folks whom are heavy into tiki.....i think alot of the witco pieces were similar prices to those commanded on ebay(if you add what shipping costs thru ebay)....overall a great day, and it seems like everyone who was there for the tiki went home with some good stuff, and carol can know that the stuff went to good tiki loving homes where these pieces will be cherished....

does anyone know what the mainlander fountain went for? or are we going to play the coy game?

It sounded like mugs and bowls were going for outrageous prices; I heard that unmarked brown three-tiki bowls were going for $60 each, and Dynasty volcano bowls sold for $50 each. That's just insane - those items are readily available on the Interwebs Series of Tubes for less - sometimes much less - than half that price.

The Witco was also selling high, but I always think Witco is overpriced. I guessed that the fountain would fetch at least $1200, and if the auction was the Price is Right, I might have won the damned thing. :) Apparently, though, all of the loose items were selling high, including plastic tikis, masks, shields, etc.

The biggest bargain seems to have been the installed fixtures, probably because no one had any idea how to get them out of there. The fireplace mantle, with two tikis, went for $550; two bidders split up the loot, each ending up with a pretty cool tiki. And one of the large tiki poles (Oceanic Arts?) went for $260.

yes, i was one of the lucky ones who ended up with one of the fireplace mantel pole carvings...again, prices are all just relevent to who will pay what for what. yes, the mugs were insanely high per piece, as were some of the other smaller things sold in lots with per piece prices, but to get a piece of the aku tiki room, and to get to walk out with that piece in hand, and knowing the loots goin to carol and bidding against ALOT of others in the know, bargins were gonna be hard to find....i got 2 items, a large witco shield, and one of the fireplace poles, and i was happy to get out with that.

....and thanks to whom ever lent us the saw zaw to get the fireplace poles out with

I planned ahead and brought the tools i needed intending to take the whole place apart if i had too.....big thanks to dave(numatiki) for bringing the sawz-all...it was the one tool i didn't bring though i might have managed with my hack saw!!!

overall it seemed people got too excited too early and started running up the prices..maybe it was the heat....by the time we got to the fixtures the prices were more reasonable-except the puffer fish lamp ($325)....glass float lamps went for $90 i think....shell lamps from $250- $75

the O.A. poles went for $150- $260....the bamboo chairs went from $10 - .50 cents each!!! basically cause they were selling all the chairs across the yard at the same time they were selling all the tiki decor and so almost no one knew.....

awesome day..i think in the end, everyone got something they were shootin for....thanks again to tom and carol..these items will find good homes....I gotta say, it was depressing though seeing the place all empty and torn up......cause at the end of the day, no matter what we won, we all still lost a another great tiki establishment......

Congrats, hala! The fireplace mantle tikis were #1B on my list of priorities. I was bummed that I didn't get one, but happy as a clam that I was able to win on #1A. :)

so what was your 1A? were you there, or did you have someone there bidding for you?....we were very happy about the fireplace....especially since we had to leave the room to change our year old daughter when the big OA poles went up, so we missed out on those.our daughter had a blast too, she was mesmerized by the auctioneer...lol

I had someone bidding for me, and won one of the big OA poles. Had I known what they went for, I might have bought two of them. However, I'm glad I didn't; one person owning two results in less total happiness (i.e. "social welfare") than two people owning one.

Did anyone take any pictures?

p.p.s....there weren't any more for you to get......i got mine then someone got the last remaining pole for $150 which was cracked all to hell...so you wouldn't have gotten another one if you wanted.....and incidentally the cracked one was the one she originally won then switched poles so as not to get you the cracked one!! go mom!!

Karma strikes again! You falsely accuse me of trying to mislead people about the auction date, and then my mom steps up and hoses you during bidding. :)

Thanks for helping her out, Tipsy. Your first round of mai tais is on me at the next Hukilau. And thanks for stopping at $250. By that time in the day, she was hell bent on walking out of there with something and wasn't going to lose. Since she didn't squander any of my budget on the small, overpriced stuff, I had given her the go-ahead to bid much higher than our winning bid. Anyway, I'm glad to know my new tiki pole's twin is in good hands.
