This one is not in Tokyo . ; )

... has all the classic Shag elements. I like...

For info ... “The Thinking Has Been Done,” from his Shag After Dark show. Was $250 new and will was limited to a run of 250. The print measures 22 X 26″. 13 colours. Released 2007.

Nice, plus bits of modernism! Geddit!

This is a 2007 print which was $ 250 new . The dealer wants $ 400 unframed , and $ 550 in this frame , matted . Frame is wood but nothing special . Note the colors are different from the photo I got via another dealer's site which is exactly the same as the one on the Shag site .

You can still get this print for $250 from Shagmart. I wouldn't pay $400 for it from another dealer.

Thanks for the heads up ! Somehow , when checking Shag's site I missed this - yikes ! I'll order it from Shagmart . Mahalo !!!

Hi Sushiman,

It's a good thing that you're getting the print from Shagmart unframed and not from the dealer. Personally, I like to treat prints like originals and give them a special framing and not just a matting.

Actually , I changed my mind and didn't buy the print . I never heard back from Shagmart after sending several emails and that turned me off . Why have an email address if you are not going to answer queries ?

Anyway , there are other prints I would rather have , so I'm just going to be patient and wait until once comes along .

Sushiman,

With ShagMart, and responding to emails,
one thing to keep in mind.

They recently (8/14) got a hold of two dozen of the serigraphs (of the 150)
of "Glorious Lifestyle."

They were sold out within minutes of being announced via the Shagmart newsletter.

Unfortunately, this (I am sure.) caused
a lot of high (and negative) email traffic.
Why?

  1. Once many of us saw the original painting at http://www.shag.com,
those of us who predominately love Shag's work for it 1960's flavor just
freaked with desire for it. Josh Agle has talked about the house in
Blake Edwards' film, The Party as a really Shaggy house, and so
this particular painting, noted as Shag's tribute to that film,
gets to the root of Shag's inspiration and appeal for a lot of us.

  2. Shortly thereafter, Outre Gallery in Australia announced that their
three-city Shag show would include the sale of the single widest Shag
print ever: "Glorious Lifestyle." They started a waiting list, which many
    of us joined immediately.

  3. Once it was clear "Glorious Lifestyle" was going to have a very high demand,
Outre Gallery did something I have not seen them do before.
Months after establishing the waiting list for "Glorious Lifestyle,"
Outre Gallery decided to limit the print to Aussie clients only.
(Framing is what most poster shops make all their money in.
That is where the real profit margins are found.)

  4. After months of being on the waiting list, lots of us complained,
both to Outre and Shagmart, since we knew Piet probably passes this
    along to Josh.
Weeks later, Outre finally sent out an apology.
Because of the continued firestorm of complaints and ill-will they generated,
Outre offered a discount on another exclusive Shag print,
"Welcome to Your New Lifestyle," to non-Aussies
that had been on the "Glorious Lifestyle" waiting list.
This attempt to appease folks didn't really work.

  5. Shagmart got the aforementioned couple of dozen signed and numbered copies,
probably 126 through 150 of the 150, and sent out the Shagmart newsletter on
    August 14th.

  6. For every person that got the print in the US, there are probably another
five that really REALLY want it. I was thinking, if I missed out on it,
if I knew anyone who knows anyone in Australia who could get
it for me down there then ship it to me.

  7. Even Outre's price for Aussies on "Glorious Lifestyle"
has gone from $895(AU) to $1500(AU).

  8. I am sure that the amount of drama surrounding the lack of availability
of this print, combined with Outre Gallery not honoring their original waiting
list, along with Shagmart's surprise announcement and then only have 24
copies to distribute has caused quite the freak storm of complaints sent
    to Shagmart's email addresses.

I used to get some individual emails from Shagmart, but even in my haste to
order "Glorious Lifestyle," I accidentally included my home zip code,
not my work one (where I wanted the print shipped) and no one at
Shagmart responded to my request via email, though they did correct it
when I got the shipping notification.

I suspect it will be a few weeks or more before Shagmart feels like
opening their email won't involve reading a bunch of complaints.

I have bought a few prints from Shagmart directly, and they
have always come through.

Aside from the last few weeks, Shagmart has been great at personal
responses via email. I got a very nice response from Piet
when I suggested they release a print of another painting of similar theme
and scale, like "The Faux Pas," or "Kookaburra's Roost" to put a band aid
on the wound.

Of course much of this is me speculating, but I saw the excitement and
disappointment surrounding this situation, even among the few causal
Shag fans I know. It will be interesting to see what the final sale
price of the following eBay auction is, as this one of the two dozen
that made it out of Australia:

eBay item # 170261978425

It ends 9/23, and no, it is not mine. I have no plans to sell mine.

REGARDING "THE THINKING HAS BEEN DONE:"
As nice as it is, I think Shagmart and other Shag print distributors
do need to show the actual serigraph and not
represent it via the painting. Personally, I feel the figures are too posed,
as if for a photograph, and it kills the implied narrative of the piece.
Paintings I find more appealing, and successful at narrative
but similar in setting would be "The End of The Evening:"

and "The Best Party:"

Best,

Gromit Fan

Shag's next Tiki-filled serigraph,"In Search of Tiki," coming in November:

Have to say I love the humor in this one, and all the tikis,
but I am torn about getting it because I prefer his images that
are more in the "Raft of the Medusa" color scheme.

Still, what do you folks think?

[ Edited by: Gromit_Fan 2008-10-11 19:59 ]

I have never ordered from Shagmart before. Is this one going to definately sell out? And how much do you think its going to cost?

I think it's a corker.

SuperEight,

ShagMart hasn't released the details regarding the print yet,
and it won't go on sale until November, making it hard to know
either answer to your question because we don't know the edition
size nor the size of the final print, both of which contribute to
a print selling out or not.

If I were to guess, I would imagine it will be
approximately 22" x 29,"
have an edition size of 250,
and sell for $250-295.

Personally, when it comes to Shag's work,
I tend to be a good barometer for what will sell out and what won't,
which I suppose makes me a very generic Shag collector.

When I have thought, "I need to order this right now,"
it was for prints that sold out pretty quickly:
"LA Modern (Night)," "The Extraordinary Evening," and
"Glorious Lifestyle."
I am not having that strong gut feeling about this one,
but this is the most Tiki-centric image released as a print
in a long time, where that really is the theme of the
piece, not sharing it so much with the 60s thing,
so my "order now!" radar may be out of whack.

Then again, I buy to own, not to resell, so I only
care about prints selling out in terms of the urgency
with which I have to buy one to have one to keep,
not for any kind of "investment" situation.
Also, having been a Patrick Nagel art collector,
I know the folly of buying prints because of some external
value inflation and so on and so forth.

Like Nagel, Shag's work could fall out of favor and see the value of
his work drop like the stock market has the last two weeks, though
a Nagel that sold for $1800 in 1984 still sells for $1800 today.

Bottom line: buy it if you like it and can afford it. :)

Back to the topic at hand, ordering from ShagMart
is easy and hassle free. I have never had any issues
with them and owe Piet Agle a debt of gratitude for the
level of customer service they have provided me.

I have at least a couple of weeks to decide, and I suspect
there will be a print released for the Johnathan Levine show
coming up in November as well (I can only afford to buy one Shag
print a month.), but if I get over my reservations about
the color palette, I will probably end up buying it:
I keep smiling, wondering what the explorer in the Pith helmet
did to piss off the rowers, and Sweet Daddy Tiki seems to like it. :)

Wow! Very cool in my opinion, especially since Shag doesn't incorporate tiki into his work
as often as he used to. My days of buying every Shag piece I could get my hands on are long gone,
even more so since my recent huge purchase, but I might make an exception for this one!

S

Gromit ,

Do you happen to know whether or not a serigraph of Mr. Blue was done ?

Note this island in the background . Looks almost like the one in Medusa !

Hey Sushiman, nice to hear from you!

To my knowledge, no. :( (Nice image!)

Someone should make an online catalog of all of Shag's prints.
This website from Shag's sometimes-publishers over at Copro-Nason,
has everything up until a couple of years ago:
http://www.copronason.com/shagweb/index.htm

Also, the book, "SHAG, LTD" has every Shag
print released until about 2005.
Shag, Ltd: Fine Art Limited Editions: A Catalogue Raisonne (Hardcover)
http://www.amazon.com/Shag-Ltd-Editions-Catalogue-Raisonne/dp/0867196475/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223919273&sr=8-10

Lovely book to look through and start coveting what others have.

I also see Shag reuses lots of elements, like the island.
The female in "Raft of Medusa" is a match for the one sitting
in the boat in "In Search of Tiki," and the figures in shadow
in "The Extraordinary Evening" were also in "The Discerning Guests,"
and the woman in the front left of "The Extraordinary Evening" is pretty
much a match in pose and facial expression to the woman in "Three Monkeys."

That may bother some people, but I love how it connects them all.
Repeated use of an element is something lots of artists do.

tiki-riviera,

You and I like "In Search of Tiki" for the same reason. I love all those
Tikis in the image. Could this even be a record for Shag of number of Tikis
in a single image released as a print?

Regarding the mountain in Medusa and Mr. Blue . You'll notice that in Medusa , the moon is on the left side ; there are 3 trees on the left and 7 on the right ; and the mountain peak slopes to the left . In Blue , the moon is on the right ; there are 3 trees on the right and 7 on the left ; and the peak slopes to the right . Whether or not this was done consciously by Shag or not , who knows ? But I feel that the scenes in Medusa and Blue take place on opposite sides of the same mountain , possibly even on the same night .

Love the tikis of course , but the amount in this new print is almost overkill . And I agree with you about the color scheme , however , the more I look at it the more I think it would contrast very nicely with the only print I have which is Medusa , and it even stars the same woman ! ; )
